EMOTIONALLY IMMATURE ADULT – These are the telling signs that an adult lacks immaturity in terms of the emotional aspect.

How can you say that someone is emotionally immature? Maturity in a person, animal, or plant means that it has already reached its final stage of growth. Someone or something that has not reached this stage yet is considered immature and when it comes to emotions, there is also such a thing.

Physically, immaturity can be easily determined but when it comes to emotions, what are the signs that tell this?

According to the American Psychological Association, emotional maturity is “a high and appropriate level of emotional control and expression”. On the other hand, emotional immaturity is “a tendency to express emotions without restraint or disproportionately to the situation”.

Here are some signs:

  • Lack of Self-Awareness – This is one of the most prominent signs. They don’t understand how their actions and words affect the other people. This hinders positive changes one can make for their personal growth.
  • Impulsive Behavior – The person acts without thinking the consequences and can lead to making hasty decisions. These are regrettable actions with long-lasting unpleasant outcomes.
  • Difficulty Taking Responsibility – They fail in taking responsibility for their mistakes and they lack accountability. They often blame others or make excuses.
  • Avoids Deep Emotional Connections – They fear vulnerability and intimacy. They would rather have superficial connections and relationships. They struggle with emotional intimacy.
  • Ineffective Communication – They are not effective in communicating their emotions with other people. They are easily overwhelmed and tends to shut down and become defensive.
  • Hungry For Attention – There will be instances where they will act or behave inappropriately in order to gain attention. They care only about themselves.
