Here’s The Reason Why Are Lips Become Cracked Or Rough Sometimes

Uncomfortable dry sensation, cracked or rough lips? Surely it could ruin your day. It feels terrible and uncomfortable licking your lips from time to time. Lips is either of the two fleshy parts that form the upper and lower edges of the opening of the mouth. It has a thin layer of skin called stratum corneum like the face. The skin on the lips is more sensitive than the rest of the body. The lips structure is different, it is made up of epidermis and dermis which the upper thin layer stratum corneum that allows visibility of blood vessels making the lips red color. Stratum corneum barely covering the vulnerable mucous membrane underneath. Lips don’t have sweat glands to provide moisture or hair to provide protection from the heat of the sun.

The reason why lips get more chapped in cold or hot weather because of extreme cold weather or hot temperature drops, blood vessels in the lips shut down, becoming poorly oxygenated, making the lips looks blue as a result. Water loss on the lips is 3 to 10 times higher than other parts of the face of body. The access wind, lack the moisture in the air and UV rays can cause your lips to lose moisture. There are other reason aside from the weather. Sometimes it causes from the things we apply on our lips. When lips becomes dry, we lick them repetitively to restore moisture. But actually, it only makes worse. The tongue transfer the saliva from your mouth to your lips which destroys the thin layer covering the lips. Try to avoid this kind of behavior.

Other causes are when you breath through your mouth which removes the moisture. Many products we use and foods we eat can also the reason like cosmetics, toothpaste, medications, figs, food coloring and even lip balm. Other lip balm can cause drying your lips. Some ingredients in lip balm like propyl gallate and phenyl salicylate can be skin irritants. And another one is salicylic acid can cause to slough off the skin easily. The best remedy to do to treat chapped lips is to drink plenty of water everyday, breath through your nose, use humidifier during dry or winter season, avoid licking your lips, stay away from harmful products and reducing sun and wind exposure.
