Most of the time we can often hear parents say that it’s okay for kids to do this and to do that because they’re just kids. Let them commit mistakes because one day they’ll just realize that what they have been doing is wrong.
Do you agree with that kind of upbringing?
Not all parents have that same way in raising their kids. Some believes that you shouldn’t treat kids as kids, instead, you should treat them as an adult. Because by treating them as kids, you are setting low expectations from them and might also get a low result. But when we see them as small people but with the capacity to think big, their future could be productive than you could ever imagine.
Here are some of the reason why sometimes you should treat kids as an adult.
KIDS WILL KNOW THEIR LIMIT
Most of the time, justifying a wrong behavior or action made by a child by saying “kids will be kids” can be a cause of the wrong behavior when they grow up. A child’s brain is still developing, so as much as possible, even at a young age, you must teach them what is appropriate and what an inappropriate behavior is. Setting boundaries and teaching them what is right from wrong will be useful for the rest of their life.
KIDS WILL KNOW AND UNDERSTAND THEIR RESPONSIBILITY
Even at a young age, kids must already know the basics of being responsible. A great way to teach kids that responsibilities are a part of life is by simply making them do their bed every morning, let them help wash after dinner or even just to feed their pet goldfish. By this, you will help them learn that success comes to people who work.
KIDS WILL DO MORE THAN WHAT IS USUALLY EXPECTED OF THEM
Being expected to do or understand less, will make us feel hurt, offended or sometimes angry. As kids, it would probably be the same thing. Challenging your children and let them prove themselves is like letting them know that you trust and believe in what they can do. Give them the chance to do things which you think they can’t.
KIDS WILL APPRECIATE THE VALUE OF BEING KIND AND CONSIDERATE
In today’s competitive world, power can sometimes be a reason to care less of what other people are feeling. Parents must, at their young age, teach their children to be sensitive to what others are feeling. Do not think that just because they are young, they cannot understand how other people may feel. Teaching children empathy is probably one of the most important skills you can pass on.
KIDS WILL MAKE THEM BELIEVE IN THEMSELVES
Believing in your child will make them believe in their self too. Encourage your child and value them as what they are, they will feel the same way about themselves. It will make them feel confident about who they are and give them confidence to conquer anything life gives them.
An addition to that, treating your kids as adults will make them stronger and resilient, by helping them cope up with different situations rather than protecting them not to feel any pain. You will also help them understand that not all the things they want can be given to them.
Treating your kids as an adult and not just a kid who can’t do much will help them grow believing that they can make a difference.
